Minimalistic Gardening For Southern California Climates

Here in Southern California we are constantly changing and adapting to different ways of landscaping and growing our gardens. With our climate getting warmer and water becoming more scarce, it’s time to adapt to our environment. Gone are the days of lush green acres of grass in our yard. In southern California, we have other fun and unique ways to make our landscapes look amazing. Minimalistic gardening is gardening for small spaces with menial maintenance. Usually, this method is reserved for people who don’t have the time or don’t want to do lawn care but it is a perfect method for those of us living in southern California.

Herb Planters

Herbs are a fun and easy way to grow your own delicious herbs for cooking. Herb planters are usually placed in window sills for convenience sake and they can do quite well there if they get enough sunlight. They don’t take up a lot of room and they add a bit of color and interest to your kitchen.plant

Indoor Plants

Placing plants indoors is a great way to have fresh air and liven up your spaces. Indoor plants don’t have to contend with the harsh California sun or drought conditions unless you forget to water them. Luckily, most of these indoor plants don’t require much water or work, making them good choices for those of us with busy work schedules or who travel a lot. Here are some of our favorite indoor plants

Anthurium
Prefers well-lit areas as long as it’s not direct sunlight. They prefer hot and humid temperatures in their natural habitat so place them in your bathroom. The bright red, heart-shaped flowers that bloom can last for eight weeks or more, giving a splash of color to your room. Anthurium only needs to be watered once a week.

Snake Plant
Snake plants are famous for their tolerance of neglect. They can go weeks without water because it does such a great job of storing it in its long, green leaves. Snake plants are easy to propagate so you can plant more around your home or pass them out to friends.

Cast Iron Plant
The Cast Iron Plant lives up to its reputation as a tough, slow-growing plant that can tolerate the darkest corners of your house. This Chinese native grows well in low light and is not picky about regular water either. Cast-iron plants can live for many years, reaching a mature height of around 2 feet

Dracaena
Caring for Dracaena means keeping the soil moist, but never soggy. Drooping or yellowing leaves will tell you if it is getting too much water. Place it in a room that has brightly lit filtered light such as a kitchen sliding door or bay window.

Potted Plantsplant
Many people in Southern California have started to plant their plants in pots instead of more traditional flowerbeds. Planting your plants and vegetables in a pot outdoors has many benefits over planting them in the ground.

  • Plants in pots can retain moisture longer than plants planted in a California yard.
  • You can move potted plants indoors or in shady areas to protect it from the sun.
  • Easier to weed

Vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, kale, and eggplants are great for planting in pots because they have shallow root systems and do not outgrow the pot.

Raised Garden Beds
Like potted plants, raised garden beds are a great way to display plants. Having a raised garden bed allows you to tend to your plants without breaking your back. Because they are raised, it makes it a lot harder for weeds and pests to get at them. Raised garden beds can be easily incorporated into your landscape designs.

Xeriscaping
Xeriscaping is a method of gardening using drought-resistant or California native plants. When you plant your landscape with native plants you don’t have to worry about constantly watering them or worrying about it being too hot out. In fact, planting with native plants is strongly encouraged by the LADWP who offer a rebate to property owners who switch from a traditional yard to a drought-resistant yard.
